Ductless mini-split air conditioners have numerous commercial and residential applications. If you are building an addition or doing a major remodel and your home does not have heating and cooling ducts, a ductless mini-split heat pump may be a cost-effective, energy-efficient choice.  These AC systems are also ideal for small apartments and room additions where extending or installing additional duct work is not feasible.

Like your home’s central air conditioning system, a mini-split AC has both an indoor and outdoor units.  These units are linked together via a conduit of electrical, refrigeration, and condensation drain lines.

ADVANTAGES

• Mini-splits are small in size, and much easier to install than a traditional HVAC system. Their small size is ideal for zoning or heating and
  cooling individual rooms. There are models that can heat and cool as many as four different zones (or rooms) while only being connected to one outdoor unit. Each room has its own its own thermostat, so you only need to heat or cool a room when it is occupied, saving energy and money.
• Mini-splits have no ducts, so they don’t have the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems. Energy losses, for ductwork located in the attic can be in excess of 30% of the systems total capacity.
• Compared with other room type air conditioners, mini splits offer more flexibility and are more pleasing to the eye. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall.
• Most manufactures offer a remote control to make it easier to turn the system on and off when it’s positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling.
• Quiet and energy efficient, up to 21 SEER, these system can save you on your energy bills.

DISADVANTAGES

• The equipment costs are higher than conventional AC systems, about 30% more than central systems (not including ductwork). Lower operating costs and rebates or other financial incentives — offered in some areas — can help offset the initial expense.
• The unit must be properly sized and installed in the proper location to provide optimal cooling . Over-sized or incorrectly located air-handlers often result in short-cycling, which wastes energy and does not provide proper temperature or humidity control. Too large a system is also more expensive to buy and operate. Choose your installer wisely.
• Appearance, since the indoor unit is mounted on the wall it is conspicuous Often times this is the major drawback for most homeowners. There must also be a place to drain condensate water near the outdoor unit.
• Qualified installers and service technician for mini splits may not be easy to find, so make sure you do you homework and find a knowledgeable installer.
